Designing a Better Home

Working from the inside out leads to efficient, comfortable spaces

"It's important to identify how you want to use a space and what you want a room to do for you," says Kathy Guyton, Allied ASID and IIDA member and named by house beautiful as one of the top ten showhouse designers in the United States. "When first getting to know clients, I try to get them to tell me how they live, not what they like."

Kathy's design skills and more than 35 years of experience are an important part of the integrated approach the firm takes with every house it designs, builds, or remodels. Her knowledge of "what will work and what won't" helps clients avoid costs and time in planning and construction. Kathy notes that she's seen many home plans and designs that look good on paper, but simply don't function once completed.

"Part of my design philosophy is that I cannot stand unused space," says Kathy. "It bothers me when people build grand houses with spaces they never enter. Things must be useful and comfortable. That means furniture should not appear to be so fine or fragile that you can't use it. I tend to keep background elements neutral and get my splash of color from the art and crafts, the carpet, the rugs, the paintings, the pottery-all the things people notice when they enter a house."

This philosophy of designing from the inside outmaking sure the interior elements function efficiently and comfortably for the homeowners and then wrapping the space with an aesthetically pleasing exteriorhas been the cornerstone of Kathy's design career. She describes her style as "casual elegance and likes to feature an interesting, easy mix of antiques, fine furnishings and decorative accessories designed for comfortable living.

This style has led to numerous gold and silver medals by ASID and a runner-up finish as Southeastern Designer of the Year in 2006. Her work has been published in numerous magazines, including Town & Country, house beautiful, Southern Accents, Southern Living, Renovation Style, Veranda, Metropolitan Home and Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, to name a few.

"Accolades and awards are great recognition," says Kathy, "but they are nothing compared to the satisfaction of seeing a homeowner who is thrilled with their new home."
